Author: Martin Hepp

The Vehicle Sales Ontology is a Web vocabulary for describings cars, boats, bikes, and other vehicles for e-commerce. The vocabulary is designed to be used in combination with GoodRelations, a standard vocabulary for the commercial aspects of offers for sale, rental, repair, or disposal. GoodRelations is a language (also known as "schema", "data dictionary", or "ontology") for product, price, and company data that can (1) be embedded into existing static and dynamic Web pages and that (2) can be processed by other computers. This increases the visibility of your products and services in the latest generation of search engines, recommender systems, and other novel applications.

This document is the official specification. For examples, tools, and other developer resources, please check the following related documents:

Examples

In this section we give brief examples of how to use the Vehicle Sales Ontology in combination with GoodRelations.

Car Sales

Scenario: Miller Inc. sells the following car:

Canoe Rental

Scenario: Miller Inc. offers canoes for 2 - 3 paddlers for rent. The rate is 10 $ per day.

Turtle:
See http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/wiki/VSO#Turtle_4.

RDFa:

SPARQL Queries

Scenario: Find car listings for cars with power windows, a mileage lesser or equal to 40,000 miles, and not more than two previous owners.

Note 1: The example is a bit more complex, since it is made to handle real data.
Note 2: It is relatively easy to make the query compatible with different units of measurement for the quantitative properties, but this is not shown in here.

You can try the query against the sample data provided at http://www.heppnetz.de/ontologies/vso/examples.rdf.

SPARQL Query:

Cardinality Recommendations

For properties, cardinality recommendations are given in the form "propertyName (0..*)".
This indicates the recommended range for the number of occurrences of this property for the same subject.

The following variants are used:

Note: These cardinality recommendations are NOT modeled as OWL cardinality constraints, since the OWL formal semantics does not match the intended semantics.

The amount of fuel consumed for traveling a particular distance or temporal duration with the given vehicle (e.g. liters per 100 km)
Typical unit code(s): LTR for liters, GLL of US Gallons, GLI for UK / Imperial Gallons

rdfs:comment

The distance traveled per unit of fuel used; most commonly miles per gallon (mpg) or kilometers per liter (km/L)
Typical unit code(s): KMT for kilometers, SMI for statute miles

Note 1: There are unfortunately no standard unit codes for miles per gallon or kilometers per liter.
